  • 1 large egg Binds the mixture together, keeping them moist.

  • 2 tablespoons water Keeps the meatballs moist.
  • 3 tablespoons minced yellow onion Sweet and savory base flavor.
  • 1 1/3 pounds 93% lean ground turkey The star protein, lean and healthy.
  • 2/3 cup dried Italian style bread crumbs Helps with texture.
  • 1/3 cup freshly grated pecorino Romano cheese Adds a salty, nutty taste.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For sautéing and flavor.
  • 1 large jar (24 oz) good quality marinara sauce For cooking and soaking those meatballs in flavor.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • In a large bowl, mix together the turkey, breadcrumbs, minced onion, garlic, egg, basil, oregano, salt, pepper, and water until just combined.
  • Use your hands to form the mixture into meatballs, about the size of a golf ball.

Cooking

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Brown the meatballs on all sides for about 5-7 minutes, transferring to a baking dish once done.
  • Pour marinara sauce over the meatballs and bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes.

Serving

  • Once cooked, let the meatballs rest for a few minutes.
  • Serve hot, over pasta or in a sub, topped with extra cheese if you like.

Notes

For best results, don't overmix the meat, form meatballs ahead and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before cooking, and use a meat thermometer to ensure they reach 165°F (74°C).
