  • 1 cup pure maple syrup Provides natural sweetness and depth of flavor.
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar Adds tanginess and brightness to the sauce.
  • 1/2 cup water Helps achieve the desired consistency in the sauce.

Seasonings

  • 3 cloves fresh garlic Infuses a savory aroma and depth of flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon crushed chili flakes Delivers heat and spice to balance the sweetness.
  • 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder or corn starch Acts as a thickening agent for the sauce.

Preparation

  • In a small saucepan, add the maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, and water.
  • Place over medium heat and bring to a boil.
  • Once bubbling, reduce the heat to a simmer then add in the minced garlic and crushed chili flakes.
  • Continue to cook while stirring for about 5 minutes to meld all the flavors.
  • In a small bowl, whisk the arrowroot powder with about 1 tablespoon of water until fully dissolved.
  • Add the arrowroot slurry to the saucepan and stir until the sauce is thickened, which should take about 1-2 minutes.
  • Allow the sauce to cool at room temperature, then transfer to a glass jar with a fitted lid.
  • Store in the fridge for up to one week.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use organic pure maple syrup. Adjust heat by incorporating fresh minced pepper or adjusting chili flakes. If it thickens too much during cooling, mix in a little water to reach desired consistency.
