Preparation

  • Snap the asparagus ends by bending each spear gently until it breaks naturally at the woody end.
  • Fill a pot with about 1/2 inch of water and place a steamer basket above the water.

Cooking

  • Bring the water to a rolling boil over medium-high heat.
  • Arrange the asparagus spears in the steamer basket.
  • Cover the pot and steam the asparagus for approximately 5 to 10 minutes until crisp-tender.
  • Check for doneness; the asparagus should be bright green and tender but firm.
  • Remove from heat and toss the asparagus with butter, kosher salt, and black pepper.
  • Add a squeeze of lemon juice if desired, and serve warm.

Notes

For best results, do not overcrowd the steamer basket and avoid overcooking to retain the vibrant color and crunch. You can customize with garlic, parmesan, or olive oil for different flavors.
