  • 1 teaspoon Sugar Helps with browning and adds a hint of sweetness.
  • 1 teaspoon Salt Enhances flavor and balances the taste.
  • 1 teaspoon Instant yeast Provides lift and makes the naan light and airy.
  • 1 cup Warm water Activates the yeast, giving your dough the perfect consistency.
  • 2 tablespoons Yogurt Adds a subtle tanginess and richness to the naan.
  • 2 tablespoons Olive oil or melted butter Keeps the naan moist and adds flavor.
  • 1 clove Garlic (optional) For garlic naan lovers, infuse an extra layer of flavor.

For Serving

  • 2 tablespoons Butter (for brushing) Gives a rich finish to freshly made naan.

Instructions

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast.
  • Mix the dry ingredients until evenly distributed.
  • Add warm water, yogurt, and olive oil or melted butter.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough into a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Cooking

  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release air and divide it into equal portions (about 6–8).
  • Roll each portion into a ball and let rest for about 10 minutes to relax the gluten.
  • Heat a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat until hot.
  • Roll each dough ball into an oval or round shape, about ΒΌ-inch thick.
  • Cook the rolled naan in the hot skillet for 1–2 minutes on each side until golden brown and puffed up.

Serving

  • Brush the cooked naan with melted butter for added flavor and a glossy finish.
  • If desired, sprinkle with minced garlic for garlic naan.
  • Keep naan warm by wrapping in a clean kitchen towel while you cook the remaining pieces.
  • Serve warm with your favorite stews, curries, or dips.

Notes

For best results, use a hot skillet to ensure a lovely char and puff on the naan. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
