Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Activate the yeast by mixing together milk and 1 1/2 teaspoons of sugar in a small bowl and let sit for 10 minutes.
  • In a stand mixer, combine flour, zest, remaining sugar, salt, egg, vanilla, and yeast mixture. Knead on low speed, then increase speed for about 7 minutes.
  • Add softened butter and knead for 10-15 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly buttered bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm area for about 2 hours or until it doubles in size.

Baking

  • Divide the dough into 6 parts, shape into ovals, place on a lined baking sheet, cover, and let rise for another 1 1/2 hours.
  • Preheat the oven to 350F (180C).
  • Brush the buns with egg wash and bake for 18-20 minutes until golden brown.
  • Cool on a wire rack.

Filling

  • Brush cooled buns with sugar syrup, cut slightly open, and fill with whipped cream.
  • Dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

To enhance flavor, utilize fresh yeast for a better rise and chill the whipped cream to prevent sogginess. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
