For the Burger

  • 1 lb ground turkey 93 percent lean
  • 4 slices part skim cheddar cheese Folded into quarters for stuffing
  • 1 tsp kosher salt For seasoning patties
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper For seasoning patties
  • 4 pieces hamburger rolls Soft, whole wheat buns

For Toppings

  • 1 cup iceberg lettuce Shredded
  • 1 medium red onion Sliced
  • 2 medium ripe tomatoes Sliced
  • 1/2 cup sliced pickles
  • 1/4 cup ketchup For serving
  • 1/4 cup mustard For serving

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the grill to medium heat and clean the grates thoroughly.
  • Fold each slice of cheese into quarters to create 4 short stacks.
  • Divide the ground turkey into 8 equal balls and flatten them into 1/4 inch thick patties.
  • Place a cheese stack in the center of 4 patties and top with the remaining 4 patties.
  • Pinch the edges of the patties together and push up the sides for even thickness.
  • Sprinkle both sides with kosher salt and black pepper to taste.

Cooking

  • Place the patties on the oiled grill, cover, and cook for about 6 minutes per side or until the center is cooked through.

Assembly

  • Transfer the patties to hamburger rolls with your chosen toppings, allowing them to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Use a tablespoon of olive oil in the turkey mix to retain moisture during grilling. Avoid high heat to prevent burning and check doneness with a meat thermometer (internal temperature should reach 165 °F).
