Preparation

  • Heat the water until hot but not boiling.
  • Add the hot water and vegetable oil to the bowl with the flour mixture.
  • Mix until a shaggy dough forms, then knead gently on a floured surface for about 1 to 2 minutes until smooth.

Cooking

  • Divide the dough into small balls, about the size of a golf ball.
  • Preheat a skillet over medium-high heat (around 375°F or 190°C).
  • Lightly flour your surface and roll out each dough ball into a thin circle, about 8 inches in diameter.
  • Place the rolled out tortilla onto the hot skillet. Cook for 30 seconds or until bubbles start to form.
  • Flip and cook for another 30 seconds until lightly browned and cooked through.
  • Repeat with the remaining dough balls, stacking the cooked tortillas in a clean kitchen towel to keep warm.
