Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 2 cups warm water Should be warm but not too hot.
  • 1 packet yeast To activate the dough.
  • 1 tbsp sugar Enhances flavor and feeds yeast.
  • 1 tbsp salt Balances flavor and strengthens gluten.
  • 2 tbsp oil Keeps the bread moist.
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Provides structure.
  • 1 large egg For brushing on the top for color and shine.
  • 1 cup hot water Creates steam for a crusty exterior.

Instructions

Prep

  • In a bowl, whisk together warm water and sugar until dissolved.
  • Add yeast to the mixture and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture.
  • Gradually add hot water while mixing until a dough begins to form.

Cook/Assemble

  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
  • Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Shape into a loaf.
  • Transfer the loaf to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, cover again, and let rise for another 30 minutes.
  • Brush the top with beaten egg for a golden finish.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the bread sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom and is golden brown.

Serve

  • Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack.
  • Slice it once it’s cool enough to handle but still warm for the best texture.
  • Enjoy with your favorite soups, salads, or toppings like avocado or hummus.

Notes

Use bread flour for a chewier texture. For a healthier version, consider using honey or agave instead of sugar. Store in an airtight container to keep it fresh longer.
