Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour Gives a nutty flavor and added fiber.
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder Helps them rise and stay fluffy.
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt Enhances all the flavors.

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce Keeps them moist and adds natural sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup Natural sweetener of your choice.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Adds depth and warmth to the flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons melted coconut oil Keeps the bites tender and adds flavor.

Topping

  • 1 tablespoon sugar mixed with 1 teaspoon cinnamon Classic churro topping for sweetness.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  • In a bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, stir together the applesauce, honey (or maple syrup), vanilla, and melted coconut oil until smooth.

Cooking

  • Combine the wet and dry ingredients until just combined; don't overmix.
  • Use a spoon or cookie scoop to place blobs of batter onto the prepared baking sheet.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon-sugar mixture on top of each bite.
  • Bake for about 12-15 minutes until golden and puffy.

Serving

  • Allow to cool slightly before serving.
  • Serve warm with chocolate sauce or whipped cream, if desired.

Notes

Chill the batter for extra puffiness and store leftovers in an airtight container for up to a week.
