  • 14 oz firm tofu Provide a protein-rich base with a satisfying texture.
  • 2 tbsp coconut aminos A soy sauce alternative for savory depth.
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch Creates a crispy coating during frying.
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast Adds a cheesy, nutty flavor.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder Introduces robust flavor.
  • 1 tsp onion powder Enhances savory depth.
  • 1 tsp sea salt Balances and elevates flavors.
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper Adds mild heat.
  • 2 tbsp olive oil Essential for frying.

Preparation

  • Press the tofu by placing it between clean kitchen towels, then set a heavy pan on top to remove excess moisture. Let it press for 30 minutes.
  • Cube the pressed tofu into 1/2-inch cubes and place them in a large bowl.
  • Pour coconut aminos over the tofu cubes and toss gently to coat.
  • In a small bowl, mix cornstarch, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, onion powder, sea salt, and black pepper. Sprinkle this mixture over the tofu.
  • Gently toss the tofu to ensure even coating, and let them rest for 5 minutes before tossing again.

Cooking

  • Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C).
  • Carefully add the tofu cubes in a single layer. Fry for approximately 2 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy.
  • Transfer the fried tofu to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil. Serve immediately.

Notes

For extra crispy tofu, ensure to press it thoroughly to eliminate moisture. Use a nonstick skillet or a well-seasoned cast-iron pan for better results. Marinate tofu in soy sauce for more flavor if desired.
