Ingredients
  

For the bread

  • 1 cup warm water Activates the yeast for optimal rising.
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast The leavening agent that helps the bread rise.
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar Nourishes the yeast, enhancing the rise and flavor.
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Forms the structure of the bread, providing texture and stability.
  • 2 teaspoons salt Enhances flavor and controls yeast activity.

Preparation

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the warm water, yeast, and sugar until dissolved.
  • Allow the mixture to sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy.
  • Stir in the all-purpose flour and salt until a thick, sticky dough forms.
  • Cover the bowl with a kitchen towel or plastic wrap and let it sit in a warm spot for 2 to 3 hours, until it doubles in size.

Baking

  • Place a Dutch oven with its lid in the oven and preheat to 450°F (232°C) for about 20 minutes.
  • Using floured parchment paper, gently shape the dough and score the top with a sharp knife, if desired.
  • Carefully move the dough (with the parchment paper) into the heated Dutch oven, cover it, and bake for 35 minutes.
  • Remove the lid and continue baking for an additional 5 to 10 minutes until a deep golden crust forms.
  • Let the bread cool on a rack for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Notes

Ensure yeast activation for the best results. Allow sufficient rising time and resist cutting the bread too soon after baking to achieve the desired texture.
