Beef and Coating

  • 1 lb Beef sirloin or flank steak, sliced into thin strips Tender cut, juicy texture.
  • 1/2 cup Cornstarch Ensures a crispy coating.
  • 1/4 cup All-purpose flour Adds structure and extra crunch.
  • 1 large Egg Binds the coating for maximum crispiness.
  • 1/4 cup Water Adjusts consistency for the batter.
  • 1 tsp Baking powder Helps achieve that perfect crisp.
  • 1 tsp Salt Brings out all the flavors.
  • 1/2 tsp Pepper Adds essential seasoning.
  • 2 cups Vegetable oil For frying, creating that crunch.

Sauce and Vegetables

  • 3 tbsp Soy sauce For a savory depth of flavor.
  • 1 tbsp Rice vinegar Adds acidity, balancing the dish.
  • 2 tbsp Hoisin sauce Sweet and savory taste.
  • 1-2 tbsp Chili sauce Provides the heat, customize to taste.
  • 1 tbsp Sugar Balances the spice with sweetness.
  • 2 cloves Minced garlic Adds aromatic flavor.
  • 1 inch Minced ginger Enhances the overall taste.
  • 1 large Onion, sliced For sweetness and depth.
  • 1 large Bell pepper, sliced Adds color and crunch.
  • 1-2 optional Red chilies, sliced For an extra kick.
  • 1 tbsp Sesame oil For a nutty finish.
  • 2 tbsp Chopped green onions For a fresh garnish.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Slice the sirloin or flank steak into thin strips.
  • In a bowl, combine cornstarch, flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Add the egg and water to the dry ingredients and mix thoroughly until smooth and well combined.
  • Prepare the vegetables by slicing the onion, bell pepper, and red chilies if using.
  • Set up your frying station with vegetable oil heated to 350°F (175°C).

Cooking

  • Dip each beef strip into the batter, ensuring it's fully coated.
  • Carefully place the battered beef into the hot oil and fry in batches. Cook for 3-4 minutes until golden and crispy.
  • Remove the beef from the oil and let it drain on a paper towel.
  • In a separate pan, sauté the sliced onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic over medium heat until the onion becomes translucent.
  • Add the crispy beef to the vegetables and pour in the soy sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce, chili sauce, and sugar. Stir-fry for 2-3 minutes until well coated and heated through.

Serving

  • Transfer the crispy chilli beef to a serving plate and garnish with sesame oil and chopped green onions.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture, optionally adding extra chili sauce if desired.

Notes

For extra crunch, double-dip the beef in the batter before frying. Use a thermometer to maintain oil temperature at 350°F (175°C). Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
