Colorful Coffee Filter Butterflies
A fun and creative craft activity for children to make colorful butterflies using coffee filters, markers, and water.

- 5 pieces Coffee Filters The base for your butterflies’ wings.
- 5 pieces Washable Markers or Food Coloring Create vibrant colors for your butterflies.
- 1 piece Spray Bottle with Water Allows colors to blend beautifully.
- 2 pieces Pipe Cleaners To form the butterflies’ bodies and antennae.
- 1 piece Scissors For shaping the wings.
- optional amount Decorative Glitter or Small Sequins For added flair to your butterflies.
Instructions
Phase 1 – Prep
- Gather all your materials and find a clean, flat surface to work on.
- If using food coloring, prepare your spray bottle by mixing the coloring with water.
- Lay out your coffee filters so that they are ready for coloring.
- Encourage your kids to choose some fun colors for their butterflies!
Phase 2 – Cook/Assemble
- Using washable markers, color in the coffee filters with different patterns and combinations.
- Spray the colored filters lightly with the water from your spray bottle.
- Let the coffee filters dry completely; this can take about 10 minutes.
- Once dry, fold the filters in half and pinch the center to create a winged shape.
- With a pipe cleaner, twist it around the center to secure the wings into place.
Phase 3 – Serve
- Display your beautiful coffee filter butterflies around the house or garden.
- Encourage your kids to show off their creations to family and friends.
- Consider using them as fun craft gifts or unique decorations for parties.
- Take photos of your colorful creations to remember this fun family activity!
Notes
For richer colors, use a thicker application of markers before spraying with water. Store the finished butterflies in a flat container to maintain their shape.
