Instructions

Preparation

  • Slice the beef round steak into evenly sized pieces, about 1/2 inch thick.
  • In one bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
  • In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and mix with buttermilk until well combined.
  • Set up your coating station with the flour mixture, the egg mixture, and a clean plate.

Cooking

  • Heat frying oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat (around 350°F or 175°C).
  • Dip each piece of steak into the flour mixture, then the egg mixture, and back into the flour, ensuring a generous coating.
  • Carefully place the coated steaks into the hot oil, frying for about 4-5 minutes per side or until golden brown.
  • Once cooked, transfer the steaks onto a paper towel to drain excess oil.

Gravy and Serving

  • In the same skillet, reduce heat to medium and add flour to the leftover oil, stirring for 1-2 minutes.
  • Slowly whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until it thickens into a gravy. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Top your Chicken Fried Steak with the gravy and serve hot, preferably with a side of greens or mashed potatoes.

Notes

For extra crispiness, let the coated steaks rest for 10 minutes before frying. Leftover gravy can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3-4 days in the fridge. To save time, prepare the flour mixture ahead of time.
