  • 2 tablespoons Chopped Chives or Green Onion For a fresh garnish (optional).

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Wash and trim the broccoli and cauliflower florets, ensuring they’re evenly sized for consistent cooking.
  • Gather all your ingredients on the countertop for easy access during cooking.
  • Prepare a baking dish by lightly greasing it with a bit of butter.

Cook/Assemble

  • In a large saucepan, melt 1/4 cup of butter over medium heat.
  • Add all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes until it’s a light golden color.
  • Slowly pour in the whole milk, whisking to eliminate lumps. Cook until the mixture thickens, around 5-7 minutes.
  • Stir in garlic powder, salt, onion powder, pepper, and nutmeg until fully combined.
  • Remove from heat and fold in half of the shredded cheese.
  • Add the broccoli and cauliflower florets, mixing them until completely coated.
  • Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  • Top with the remaining cheese and panko bread crumbs, followed by small dots of remaining butter.

Serve

  • Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  • Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
  • Garnish with chopped chives or green onions, if using, and enjoy your heart-healthy meal!

Notes

For the best results, consider adding extra cheese for a creamier texture, or substitute whole milk with plant-based milk for a lighter option. Store leftovers in airtight containers to keep them fresh.
