Ingredients

For the Fish

  • 1 lb white fish (like cod or tilapia) the star of the show; flaky and mild.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour helps create that crispy exterior.
  • 1 cup cornmeal adds a fantastic crunch and flavor.
  • 2 tsp chili powder brings a kick of heat and depth.
  • 1 tsp cumin adds a warm, earthy note.
  • 1/2 tsp paprika enhances color and offers a subtle sweetness.
  • Salt and pepper to taste essential for seasoning.
  • 1 cup buttermilk keeps the fish moist and tender.
  • Vegetable oil for frying needed for that golden, crispy finish.

For Serving

  • Taco tortillas the perfect wrap for all those goodies.
  • Fresh toppings think cabbage, avocado, cilantro, and lime for a zesty finish.

Instructions

Preparation

  • Start by gathering all your ingredients. Having everything at hand makes the process smoother!
  • Rinse your fish and pat it dry with paper towels. This helps it fry better!
  • In a bowl, mix flour, cornmeal, chili powder, cumin, paprika, salt, and pepper. This will be your breading.
  • Set up a dipping station with the buttermilk in one bowl and your breading mix in another.
  • Cut your fresh toppings—shredded cabbage, sliced avocado, chopped cilantro, and wedges of lime—whatever you like!

Cooking

  • Heat vegetable oil in a skillet over medium heat until it’s shimmering. You can check by dropping a small piece of fish—if it sizzles, it’s ready!
  • Dip each piece of fish into the buttermilk, letting excess drip off. Then, coat it with the breading mix.
  • Carefully add the coated fish to the hot oil, being cautious of splashes.
  • Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden and crispy. Use a slotted spoon to remove them and place them on paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  • Warm up your tortillas in a dry skillet for a few seconds on each side, just until they’re soft and pliable.

Assembly

  • Take a warm tortilla and layer on the crispy fish.
  • Add your selection of fresh toppings—cabbage for crunch, avocado for creaminess, cilantro for brightness, and a squeeze of lime for zing.
  • Repeat until all your fish is used up!
  • Serve immediately with extra lime wedges on the side.
  • Watch everyone enjoy their delicious tacos—you might want to make a second batch!

Notes

Marinate the fish in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes for extra tenderness. Experiment with different toppings—pickled onions or a spicy crema can elevate your tacos!
