Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 cups unbleached all-purpose or bread flour
  • 2 teaspoons kosher salt
  • 2 cups lukewarm water Crucial for yeast activation
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons instant yeast Can substitute with active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon butter For greasing bowls

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.
  2. Slowly add the lukewarm water and stir until the mixture forms a sticky dough.
  3. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise for about 1.5 to 2 hours, until doubled in size.
  4. After rising, gently punch down the dough with two forks and divide it into two equal halves.
  5. Transfer each half into well-buttered Pyrex bowls and let rise again for 20 to 30 minutes.
  6. Preheat your oven to 425ºF. Bake the loaves for 15 minutes.
  7. Reduce the heat to 375ºF and continue baking for another 15 to 17 minutes.
  8. Remove the loaves and let them cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

For added flavors, try incorporating herbs or cheese into the dough. Store the bread wrapped in cloth or freeze slices tightly wrapped for longer storage.
