Ingredients

Caramel Topping
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar Caramelizes to create a sweet, rich topping.
Custard Base
  • 4 large eggs Provides structure and richness to the custard.
  • 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk Adds sweetness and creaminess.
  • 1 ¼ cup whole milk Balances the richness of the canned milk.
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract Enhances flavor with a classic touch.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, pour in the sugar. Stir continually until it melts and transforms into a golden-brown syrup.
  3. Quickly pour the caramel into a 7-inch round pan or flanera, swirling it to cover the bottom. Set it aside to cool and harden.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, whole milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Pour the custard mixture over the cooled caramel in the pan.
Baking
  1. If using a flanera, cover it with its lid; if not, tightly wrap it with aluminum foil. Place it in a larger baking dish and fill the dish with water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan pan.
  2. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Cooling and Serving
  1. Carefully remove the baking dish from the oven and take the flan pan out of the water. Allow it to cool to room temperature.
  2. Cover with the lid or aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight to set completely.
  3. To serve, slide a knife around the edges to loosen the flan. Place a plate on top and swiftly flip it over to release the flan onto the plate, allowing the caramel to cascade over the top.
  4. Slice and serve, pairing with a dollop of whipped cream if desired.

Notes

For a lighter version, you can swap whole milk for 2% or almond milk, though it may alter the flavor and texture. Be careful not to overbake to avoid cracks in the flan. Serve cold for the best experience.
